New National Champs- The Texas Longhorns
I had to go to bed early last night, and when I got up a few hours later, the Texas USC game was still going in the 3rd quarter with Texas leading 16-10. I sensed even then, that Texas was giving USC all it could handle and then more. I knew the game could go either way based on closing momentum. So I was not surprised when I read in the morning that Texas pulled it out in the last minute with Vince Young running it in on 4th down from the 8 yard line. What a game for Texas to win! The Rose Bowl and the national championship. They won it from the reigning champs,USC who have two great athletes in Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart. But it was Vince Young, who many people thought should have won the Heisman trophy, that played one of the greatest games a quarterback has ever played in history. He rushed for 200 yards and threw for 267 yards for a total of 467 total offensive yards! With the game on the line, and no receivers open, he scrambled into the end zone to win perhaps the greatest college championship game in history.
Vince knelt down in the end zone and gave thanks to the Lord who gave him the talent and the opportunity to lead a great Texas team to victory. He infelicitously called God the man upstairs but I was still impressed in his interview how humble he is. Not knowing anything of his background, I believe Vince is a godly christian man. He punctuated his comments with phrases like, " it was a blessing", " I have been blessed with wonderful teammates". God bless the Texas Longhorns and Vince Young.Southern Cal was a great champion for two years but it was the year of the Lone Star State that won the "Big Kahuna" this year. And it was one of God's children who was the big star. Praise God.
