Random Thoughts

The posts at this time of the night are random as can be seen over the last few days. This is mainly because I just got up to go to work a few minutes ago and I am sitting at the computer having my first cup of coffee to begin my day. Whatever is on my mind at this time, I put down in my blog to give this blog a personal element as well as the intellectual content that I normally post in the afternoon or early evening. I just saw the replay of the Letterman/Oreilly confrontation last night on the Letterman show. I must say I was surprised at how antagonistic and combative Dave Letterman was, since as host you normally invite a guest to allow them to talk and express their opinions freely. Letterman went after Oreilly immediately about the war on Christmas going on in the culture. He didn't believe it was happening. This reveals how sheltered guys like Letterman are from the regular national news. He said he did not have the intellectual ammunition to counter what Bill said but he had a feeling that about 60% of what Oreilly said was crap. He criticized Oreilly even though he admitted that he had never seen his show. Oreilly sat there and kept his composure and just presented the facts about the war in Iraq and the statements of Cindy Sheehan whom Letterman thought we should have nothing but sympathy for.
Now, I generally like Dave Letterman. He comes off each night as a classy guy and lets his guests shine on the show but his antagonistic attitude toward Oreilly was very evident showing his left political ideology. Letterman also showed himself to be an intellectual ass. I will continue to watch Letterman as I get ready for work but Dave needs to better prepare himself with the facts before he invites a seasoned journalist like Oreilly on his show to debate the culture wars. It was interesting that Letterman's denial of a culture war proved that a culture war was happening by what he said and how he treated Bill Oreilly. I am not a devotee of Oreilly. I agree with him on about 75-80% of what he says. He is a libertarian not a conservative so sometimes my views clash with his on various moral, political and religious issues. I do think he is an important voice to be heard and Letterman's statements and behavior were unacceptable for a man of his caliber and in his position as a national talk show host. Therefore the culture wars go on even in the midst of its own denial.Dave shot himself in the foot last night. Be prepared next time Dave, and think before you speak.

Good post. I completely agree, except that I've never had much respect for Letterman. His obviously left bias smacks me in the face everytime I watch his show. I prefer Leno, b/c even though his personal views are liberal, he is always fair on his show, and "lefties" are bashed as much as anyone else.

You are right about Letterman. I usually ignore the political statements made in the monologues but his treatment of Oreilly was uncalled for. You convinced me to start watching Leno.
